Brainstorming Ideas about the Forest
As I woke up this morning, I was thinking about the forest and brainstormed some ideas. Here they are in no particular order:
- YOW Board of Directors Needs an EnvironmentalistThe current board of directors lacks an environmental/climate change perspective. We need someone like Catherine McKenna or David Suzuki to provide oversight of adherence and compliance to the government's 2023 agenda.
- Reverse Engineering2022-04-09Some thoughts I had this morning:
- Stay of Execution MetaphorIt feels like this urban forest is permanently on death row. The forest received a temporary stay of execution due to Otto's pause action. We need to find a way to give it a "pardon" and have it protected forever.
- Memorandum of agreement between the Government of Canada and the Airport Authority and the City of Ottawa to permanently protect the forest as "environmentally protected."
- Transport Canada should sell or give the forest to a land trust, an entity modeled on something like the St Simons Land Trust.
- Neighbourhood WatchThe forest needs constant monitoring, just like a neighbourhood watch. Community residents should visit the forest daily, treat it like a living being, and provide daily reports on something like a blog. It would be interesting to create a time series of daily temperatures in the forest at the same locations over time, recorded beside the YOW Environment Canada daily temperature.
- Historian, Archivist, CuratorThe 2021 assault on the forest needs to be documented in detail for posterity and added to some kind of permanent record. Perhaps we could solicit the help of a local historian/archivist/curator.
- Dendrochronology ReportA formal, professionally done detailed dendrochronology report could be completed and added to the permanent record/archive.
- TD Friends of the Environment FoundationYears ago, Eric Snyder and Manuel Costa were Board members on the Ottawa Chapter of the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. It would be useful to structure some kind of project that the TD Friends of the Environment could fund. Having TD signage on the forest would be a huge plus. It would almost be like the forest is endorsed by TD Bank. There is a TD Bank branch in the shopping mall at the SE corner of Hunt Club and Riverside, just up the road from the forest. That mall is a tenant of the Ottawa International Airport Authority. If we can envision some kind of project that FEF could fund, we could brand it with this signage:
- Ottawa Forest KeeperDoes Ottawa have a "Forest Keeper"? It has a "river keeper," Ottawa Riverkeeper. The Forest Keeper could be the voice of the forest.
- Tree Spirits
-
OCAF is funded with a $20 million endowment from the federal government as part of the Low Carbon Canada Cities (LC3) initiative managed by the Federation of Canadian Municipalities. The LC3 network consists of centers in seven cities: Calgary, Edmonton, Halifax, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Vancouver.
- Mascot for the ForestCreating a mascot for the forest could help bring it to life and anthropomorphize it. An owl, hawk, duck, or other animal could be possibilities.
