Have you ever been to a "star city?" These unique places can be found throughout Europe, but their full fractal beauty isn't realized until you see them from above. Star cities came about in the 16th and 17th century as a way to build improved bastion forts. Their protrusions minimized any blind spots, and low-lying ramparts weren't much of a target for enemies. This is Naarden, a city in the Netherlands whose layout represents the best of "star city" architecture: Layers of fortifications and a snowflake-like complexity ringed by geometric moats.
